I had an itinerary. A tight, carefully planned itinerary for my day in Porto three miradouros, a bookshop, a boat ride along the Douro, all timed to the hour. Then the sky opened up, and none of it happened. This story follows what became of that ruined afternoon: ducking into a tiny cafĂ© with peeling yellow walls, ordering a coffee I hadn\’t planned to have, and ending up in a two-hour conversation with the owner, an old man named Manuel who\’d run the shop since 1978. He told me about Porto before the tourists came, about his late wife, about the port wine cellars his father used to work in. Outside, the rain turned the cobblestones into rivers of reflected light, and I realized I hadn\’t checked my phone once. This is a story about the tyranny of the perfect itinerary, and what happens when you finally let it go. It\’s about how the plans we cling to so tightly are often just scaffolding for the version of a trip we think we\’re supposed to have and how the real trip, the one worth remembering, often shows up when the scaffolding collapses. I left Porto having seen almost nothing on my list, and having gained something far better instead.
